Jodie Whittaker will receive the same payment for her work as Doctor Who when starts in the role.

Actress Jodie was announced as the 13th Doctor after the men’s Wimbledon tennis final on Sunday and her first scenes will air at Christmas.

And it has been confirmed she will receive the same salary as Peter Capaldi, who plays the outgoing Doctor.

The amount of money major BBC stars receive for their work for the broadcaster was recently announced and it was noticed by some that men were paid more than woman.

However, BBC Director General Tony Hall insists Jodie will be paid the same as her predecessor Peter: between £200,000 and £249,000.

Tony is delighted a female has been cast in the role and told the Evening Standard: “I do think it’s time for the Thirteenth Time Lord to be a woman. I watched my first Doctor Who in the sixties, hiding behind the sofa.

“As a devoted Whovian, I’m incredibly excited.”

Jodie was unveiled as the next Doctor in a trailer that appeared on BBC One last week.

After the announcement, she said: “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with (head writer and executive producer) Chris (Chibnall) and every Whovian on this planet.

“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”
