We thought we knew everything there is to know about Love Island – we are Closer online after all – but it turns out there is something that has somehow escaped our attention over the years.
If you’ve been a Love Island fan for a while then you’ll no doubt have heard the Islanders talk about the ‘voice of God’ or VOG, which the producers use to communicate with the villa over a tannoy. Think Big Brother but make it Love Island.
While the name ‘voice of God’ sounds quite intimidating, it turns out that’s not the case at all and the Islanders actually end up becoming friends with the producers behind it.
When she came to visit Closer HQ with Ayo Odukoya, Love Island 2024 contestant Jessica Spencer filled us in on what the VOG is really like.
“I thought VOG would be some really scary and serious voice, but it’s not,” she explained. “VOG are your mates. There’ll be different people on VOG, but you’ll get to know them.”
She continued, “But you don’t know their face, which is the funniest thing. When we come out, the first thing you say is, ‘Oh my god, I can’t wait to follow you on Instagram. I can’t wait to see what you look like’, but they become your friends, they really do.
“Sometimes even in the dressing room, if we weren’t filming, we’d be sat there getting ready and we would just chat to VOG. We’d be like, ‘oh, what did you do today?’
“They’d have names, by the way, they weren’t just VOG. Whoever was on the VOG, we’d be like, ‘oh what did you do today? What have you had for dinner?’ We’d actually speak to them, they were our friends.”
But despite the Islanders forming firm friendships with the VOG, the producers are never shown on screen (for obvious reasons) so viewers won’t even get to see just how close they are.
What a shame.
