So… what’s a penile fracture?

It really is almost EXACTLY what it sounds like.

When his penis is erect, his penis is filled with blood. So, if his penis is bent suddenly or forcefully, the trauma can rupture the lining of one of the two cylinders in the penis (corpus cavernosum) responsible for erections — resulting in a penis fracture.

This usually occurs during sex… or, you know, through aggressive masturbation.

Does a penis have to be erect to suffer a fracture?

Yes; penile fractures only happen when he has an erection. When he’s soft, the pressure inside his penis is low, so it’s more able to bend and withstand unexpected forces.

What are the symptoms of a penile fracture?

The main signs of a penis fracture include:

Which sex positions are most dangerous for his penis?

A study published in the journal of Advances in Urology concluded that the ever-so-bouncy “woman on top” was “potentially the riskiest sex position,” as it caused the most penile fractures.

They explained: "Our hypothesis is that when woman is on top she usually controls the movement with her entire body weight landing on the erect penis, not being able to interrupt it when the penis suffers a wrong way penetration, because the harm is usually minor in woman with no pain but major in the penis.

“On the contrary, when the man is controlling the movement, he has better chances of stopping the penetration energy in response to the pain related to the penis harm, minimising it."

However the following sex positions are just as likely to lead to penile fracture:

What other factors can increase the risk of a penile fracture?

A study conducted by Dr Kramer from the University of Maryland School of Medicine revealed that penile fractures are more likely to occur when:

      1. The men are having extramarital affairs
      1. The sex is taking place outside the bedroom (such as in a car, at work, or in an elevator)

Basically, penile fractures are most likely to occur during "stressful" situations in which sex is hurried.

What should you do if he fractures his penis?

A penis fracture is a very serious injury, and requires urgent medical attention.

      So go to hospital, ASAP.

The injury can usually be diagnosed with a physical exam, and prompt surgical repair is typically recommended.

Can doctors fix a broken penis?

If you take him to see a doctor quickly, his prognosis is pretty good.

However he needs to go under the knife within three days of the injury, otherwise there’s less chance they’ll be able to fix it.

Will a penile fracture cause permanent damage?

If you don’t get a penile fracture treated ASAP, the scarring could result in deformity of the penis; yup, we’re talking a curve in the peen.

In more serious cases, he may find himself unable to stay hard long enough to have sex (erectile dysfunction) - or, in very bad cases, unable to get hard ever again.

That’s why it’s so important to go to the doctor straight away; it may be embarrassing, but it’s nothing they haven’t seen before - and a little humiliation is a LOT better than a permanently damaged lovestick.

Will he be able to have sex again after a penile fracture?

All being well, he should be able to have sex again about 4 to 6 weeks post-op. Woohoo!

      How common are penile fractures?

Penile fractures are rare - in fact, in the past 13 years, fewer than 100 people came in with injuries. So if you like it on top, feel free to stay up there!
