Here’s why you should NEVER keep your milk in the fridge door

Well here is something we didn't know.

Milk in a fridge

It seems only natural, the place for the milk to live has always been the fridge door with the rest of the cartons and bottles. They are kept upright, secured tightly with no risk of spillages. But who would have known, we have been doing it wrong all these years!

This is truly groundbreaking news as we have finally found the reason for our milk smelling funky a few days before the expiry date.

According to Click2Houston, temperatures vary in the fridge and the warmest place is actually the door, meaning that it is actually the worst place to keep the milk.

Condiments and those cheeky treats (chocolate) are perfect for this section. So the best place for milk to be kept is at the bottom to the back of the fridge, which is the coolest part of the fridge.

This brings us back to the school days, remembering those science lessons, learning that heat rises and it is always cooler at the bottom.

For the layout of your fridge it is recommended that raw meat is kept near the bottom at the back along with the milk, the middle shelf is best for holding yoghurts, the top shelf is best for non cooked foods and fruit juices, leaving the fridge draws left to be filled with fruits and vegetables.

Here are some of the guidelines in looking after your fridges and how to avoid any nasty little troubles for the future, courtesy of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland:

  • The temperature should be between 0°C and 5°C degrees (ideally 4°C).

  • Follow the storage instructions on food labels.

  • Only keep leftovers for 2 or 3 days.

  • Clear out your fridge regularly, getting rid of foods past their ‘Use By’ dates.

  • Use a mild cleaning agent to wash your fridge.
