Kimberly Wyatt’s post-baby fitness tips: ‘Mums shouldn’t feel pressure to lose weight’

Closer speaks to Kimberly Wyatt on how she got in shape post-baby- new mums take notice!

What were your main concerns about keeping fit after giving birth?

I had to have an unplanned caesarean, which meant that my tummy muscles were severed during the birth. Getting back into shape after Willow was born is something that didn’t happen quickly, I couldn’t exercise for six weeks afterwards as everything was sore and sensitive, but once I had the all clear from my doctor, I started to do gentle exercise. I would take Willow for long walks and my trainer Jane Wake was really good at helping me to find ways of stretching and light exercises that started to bring my muscles back together.

Were you nervous about getting back into the gym?

I suppose I was nervous in a way that I didn’t actually realise how much my body had been through until I tried to do all the things I did pre-pregnancy. By the time I got back to the gym, I’d lost a huge amount of flexibility, but I was excited to start working hard to get my pre-baby body back!

What can new mums expect when it comes to their first post-baby work out?

I think new mums need to expect that it’s going to be tough. You may not be able to stretch in the same ways that you did and if you can, you’re lucky! Yes, it’s hard and there is no magic solution, it takes hard work and dedication, so mums, stick with it! You should already be proud of what you have achieved.

Being apart from your baby during a workout is hard, how can new mums get around this?

I do a lot of my workouts at home and I did for a number of weeks before I hit the gym. You can still exercise with your baby and bond with them in an active way. Willow and I will do push-up kisses and I will hold her while I squat so that we are still having fun together- we always go for a walk in the fresh air too! But, if I’m in the gym or away from her, I know I’m setting her a good example and encouraging her to have a healthy and active lifestyle.

What did you struggle with most when it came to getting back into shape?

That’s a hard one, most of it! But I think I struggled with abs the most, just because your abdominal areas are under a lot of pressure during pregnancy and birth.

Are you worried that women feel too much pressure to lose weight after having a baby?

I worry that women feel the pressure to lose weight in the wrong ways. You have to exercise when you are ready and your body will tell when you are ready. Have one goal. What do you want to achieve? I wanted to do a triathlon and I signed up to the Vitality World Triathlon in London on May 31st so I had no excuses to get training again. But your goal doesn’t have to be as extravagant, it could be that you will do two classes a week and make sure you walk every day.
