If you're hankering after a mega-watt smile, there are a few teeth-straightening methods available. The most popular of the lot? Invisalign. Hailed as a modern, discreet, and effective alternative to traditional braces - everyone from Khloe Kardashian to Justin Bieber has used clear aligners to achieve a perfect smile. But what does an Invisalign journey actually look like, is everyone a candidate and how long does it take to typically see results? We asked Dr Imran Sayed, Clinical Director and Partner at Chelsea & Fulham Dentist to answer all your burning questions about Invisalign.

How does Invisalign differ from traditional braces in terms of effectiveness and timeline?

"When comparing Invisalign to traditional braces, both are effective at straightening teeth, but they have distinct advantages depending on your needs. Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, removable, and more comfortable as they lack wires or brackets. Traditional braces might be better for severe or complex cases, but Invisalign handles most cosmetic alignment issues excellently. Invisalign often works faster than traditional braces, typically completing treatment within 6-12 months, whereas braces might take 18-24 months or more. The exact duration depends on your individual case."

What is the process for getting started with Invisalign?

"The process starts with an initial consultation where we’ll assess your smile and determine if Invisalign suits your needs. Using 3D imaging technology and scanners, we create a custom treatment plan. Your aligners are made specifically for you and typically arrive in a few weeks. Once we have fitted the first aligners in the clinic, you’ll continue to wear the aligners daily and change them every week until your treatment is complete."

What are the daily requirements for someone wearing Invisalign?

"You must aim to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day—yes, even while sleeping. Remove them only for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and brushing.
You should clean your aligners at least twice daily with a gentle brush and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can warp the plastic. It is very important to maintain good oral hygiene throughout the process and brush and floss diligently to avoid complications like staining and tooth decay."

What should patients do to maintain their results?

"Once your treatment is complete, retainers are a must to prevent your teeth from shifting back. Teeth have a sort of memory and will always want to return to where they started! Retainers may be worn nightly or as prescribed. Regular dental reviews and hygiene appointments also help keep your smile in top shape."
