Scientists think they may have found a link between the two...

We often hear conflicting news when it comes to alcohol. Some reports suggest that drinking your favourite tipple actually has surprising health benefits, and that those who indulge every now and again are less prone to heart failure or heart attacks.

On the other hand, some medical professionals have warned that excessive drinking can cause a host of issues like high blood pressure and inflammation of the stomach.

However, scientists have now revealed that a few glasses of your favourite red wine could actually have a very positive effect on your body – particularly if you’re a woman who is trying to conceive.

Research from Washington University assessed the link between the amount of alcohol consumed and a woman’s fertility. Red wine is known for having a high quantity of resveratrol, which is an antioxidant.

They asked 135 women to keep a diary of what they drank every month, and the results were surprising. They showed that the participants, whose ages ranged from 18 to 44 years old, that drank at least five glasses of red wine were more likely to have a larger bank of eggs.

Who knew?!

But that said, health professionals advise that anyone actively attempting to conceive is recommended to avoid alcohol.

Chairman of the British Fertility Service told The Times: “The exposure of the developing foetus to alcohol may cause irreversible developmental damage, so alcohol consumption should be less than six units [roughly two large glasses of wine] per week for women wishing to conceive.”

It has to be noted that the sample size was quite small, and it would be interesting to see if the results translated when the pool of participants was increased.
