It’s no secret that autumn and winter can be a depressing time. As the days start to get shorter it can feel as though our energy levels are depleting faster than ever. This can lead to us feeling down in the dumps and- in more serious cases- depressed.

Along with a healthy diet, you can boost your energy and mood simply by trying to keep in shape.

PureGym personal trainer Octavio Dias has suggested these particular workouts to help you make winter 2015 your healthiest and happiest yet.

Octavio explains: “If you have a stress related problem, physical activity can get you in the right state of mind to be able to identify the causes of your stress and find the solution. You need to feel robust and you need to feel strong mentally.

“Exercise will clear your thoughts, enabling you to deal with your problems more calmly, improving your health, and helping you to sleep. All of this is due to the release of chemicals called endorphins into your blood stream, making you feel relaxed and happy, fighting depression and anxiety.”

Spinning/ cycling

“High energy activity that accelerates your heart rate releases natural opiates that make you feel good not only physically but mentally as well.”

This is also a great way to tone your bum and thighs!

Swimming

“Swimming actually boosts endorphins in the body, increasing the feeling of wellbeing. This boosts not only relaxation chemicals, but it is also highly synonymous with meditation.”

Swim first thing in the morning to give yourself a refreshing and energising boost for the day.

Boxing

“Taking up boxing deters any stress related to cellular ageing - ideal for any profession, especially office based jobs which involve substantial periods of sitting.”

If you don’t fancy getting in the ring, simply go to a boxing training class. You’ll see and feel the benefits within just a few short sessions.

Yoga

“Yoga switches your brain to a peaceful mode; ideal to fight depression, anxiety and stress.”

Go in the mornings or evenings to help centre yourself during the busy working week.

Squash/tennis

“High intensity physical activity bumps the production of the brain’s endorphins, distracting you from stress and improving your mood.”

This is a great sport to take up with your partner. Get fit together!
