Bill's vegan menu

Whether you're a full time vegan, vegetarian, dabbling in meat-free Mondays or simply plant-based curious, you still want to eat out, right?

Luckily, restaurants are really waking up to the needs of the meat and dairy-avoider.

by CHLOE

by CHLOE is a totally vegan, fast food restaurant with two outlets in London. If kicking meat has left you feeling bereft of Big Macs, this is the place for you, although the food and the venue is a whole lot prettier than the golden arches will ever be.

There's a whopping four burgers on offer, plus a monthly special. We went for the guac burger (below), an interesting mix of black bean, quinoa and sweet potato patty served in a whole grain bun with tortilla strips inside. Because who doesn't love a triple hit of carbs?

If you've brought a bib, we highly recommend the pesto meatball sub. A sloppy as heck sammich of balls, marinara sauce and some sweet peppers because HEALTH.

We often bemoan the lack of decent vegan dessert. Not so at by CHLOE. We treated ourselves, because it was a Thursday, to their chocolate chocolate (not a typo) push pops - as lush a chocolate ice cream we've ever tried. The only downside? We could have shoved two in, easily.

by CHLOE is a fast food restaurant, so not a place to linger over coffee in the candlelight, but we loved the vibey feel and - yes, we're actually going to say this - extremely Instagrammable interior.

Bill's

Bill's is a cafe chain founded by Bill Collison. He started out as a greengrocer so he's definitely up for making plants the star of the show. The aubergine and miso fritters, new for 2020, are a total delight and the vegan duck salad starter is SPICY but hefty in size and a tasty sensation,Of the vegan mains, we went for the aubergine, lentil and chickpea dhal because: health. It didn't disappoint on the smug front and was packed full of cauliflower plus some proper tasty fried aubergine.Vegans are often short-changed when it comes to pudding. Not so at Bill's where you can choose from a chocolate fondant, coconut 'ice cream' with mango sauce and coconut flakes, sorbet or parfait. We went for the 'ice cream' because the mango sauce meant it must count as one of your five a day, right? LUSH.Find out more about Bill's restaurants and book a table.

Stem + Glory vegan duck pancakes2 of 9

Stem + Glory

Stem + Glory is a vegan restaurant with locations in London and Cambridge, and what a delight it is.For starters we chose Kimchi Pancakes, an excellent take on the duck pancakes we used to eat before we knew better. They were light, delicate and we could easily have devoured a larger portion if they were available as a main. Frankly, we'd happily have had them as the dessert course too, they really were that good. For our larger plate (or mains if, like us, you're from the north) we went for luxury lasagne, a light take on the Italian classic with sheets of celeriac in place of pasta. There's no getting away from it, celeriac has a very distinctive taste. But if you love it, as we do, this is proper delicious and is served with the most incredible seed crackers we have ever tasted. Hand on heart. We found room, because we are nothing if not thorough, for a dense, wonderful raspberry cheesecake which gives any dairy-based one a serious run for its money. Staff are casually dressed and friendly and the London restaurant was buzzy and fun on a Friday night. We'll be back for seconds for sure.A three course vegan meal with wine for two at Stem + Glory is £89 withRed Letter Days.

Zizzi

Long gone are the days when you had to hunt down restaurants that catered to the meat-avoider. And hallelujah for that.Much-loved high street brand Zizzi not only have many vegan and veggie options, they've also created a festive menu that really jingled our bells. We started with courgette fritti because we are adults and can do whatever we like. It's the prefect mix of green and grease and they've got to be healthier than regular chips, right? They're GREEN. They certainly taste nicer, if nothing else. For our main course, we went for the vegetarian festive special, Aubergine Rotolo. Rich, indulgent, baked pasta swirls, oozing with cheese and given extra depth and interest by smoky peppers. Ten out of ten, we would Aubergine Rotolo again and happily have these as a festive treat. There's no way we could have managed the festive red velvet brownie (dangnammit) but we did manage to find a little corner for a shared chocolate gelato, an intensely grown-up iced delight. There's sorbet for the dairy avoiders too.And coffee served with an unexpected honeycomb treat made us feel like the chicest patrons in Camberley on a wet autumn afternoon. The Super Festivo set menu is £25.95 for a three course meal and includes a glass of Prosecco or a Passion Fruitini. Find and book Zizzi.

Inamo

What's the one thing better than a vegetarian and vegan menu? That's right: an all-you-can-eat vegan and vegetarian menu. Put on your extra loose pants and get ready for a deep dive into the delights at pan-Asian and Japanese restaurant Inamo.Their sharing menu in the secret garden has 11 dishes, eight of which are veggie and six of which are vegan. The full menu, that comes with an all-you-can-eat option, has 22 veggie dishes and 16 vegan dishes. Trust us, you're not going hungry here.We kicked off with miso and lime cashews, a generous bowl of delightfully spiced nuts, and a fine introduction to the meal.We then scoffed down a plate, and it was a big plate, of some of the finest chilli tofu we've ever had, with a side of decadently unctuous aubergine. Feeling the need for something a little green, we cleansed our palates and our conscience with freshly made, sweetly presented, red dragon rolls. Think it can't get better? The sharing menu comes with two double gin and tonics - each. Quite the digestif. Inamo has three locations in London: Camden, Soho and Covent Garden. Secret Garden Dining with an eight dish sharing menu for two at Inamo Camden is £69 instead of £143.99 at BuyaGift

TOZI

TOZI is a Venetian-Italian restaurant and bar in the heart of Wicked Land, London. The Italian-Venetians aren't exactly famed for embracing a meat-free diet BUT the courteous staff at this buzzing destination put our minds at ease and told us anything on the menu could be made vegan. Well, maybe not the meat plate, but pretty much everything else. They also talked us through the menu, as nothing is marked as vegetarian or vegan.TOZI specializes in small sharing plates, the same concept as tapas, and they recommend choosing around three per person. They brought over a complimentary bread basket to start with. It's said that you can tell the mark of a restaurant by what it gives away. If so, TOZI gets top marks. The toasted, seeded flatbread was divine, all crunch and toast, the ciabatta moist and delicious and the olive oil served with it pungent and punchy.Small plates-wise, we chose zucchini fries: a small plate piled high with light crisp courgette fries that are so good you think you'll never even look at a potato fry again. But it would be a shame to ignore tubers totally, and so we also asked for roast potatoes which were little pillows of soft, garlicky wonder. From the cheese selection, we picked out Camembert di bufala, because we've never had buffalo Camembert before. It was rich, creamy and had a distinct taste of buffalo. Wonderful. For dessert, caramel pannacotta was a delight, a rhubarb compote cutting through the richness of the caramel cream. But I must admit to jealousy of my pal's towering spectacle of affogato. If I go again, and I will go again, I'll leave a little corner for that, for sure. Book a table at TOZI.

St Luke's Table

Looking for somewhere to impress a date? The dark, romantic, crypt restaurant at members' club Library will be sure to make you swoon. The intimate restaurant has a mixed menu but with three vegan choices on the starter, main and dessert courses. We started with a vodka martini and a bread plate, because why wouldn't we? The bread was delightfully griddled and came with a robust olive oil for dipping. For our (second) starter, we went for grilled asparagus with pea shoots and a purple potato salad, a delicate, refined and extremely pretty plate of food, given added bite with toasted sesame seeds. We plumped for linguine artichokes for the main event. A comforting bowl of fresh pesto with a fantastic walnut pesto, semi-dried tomatoes and a pleasing crunch of parsley toasted breadcrumbs. Not going to lie, our hearts sank a little when we realized the most decadent vegan dessert was avocado chocolate mousse. But soared when it actually arrived at the table. Not only was the portion a pleasingly large size (in fancy restaurants we live in fear of tiny portions), but it had a silky, light texture we haven't encountered with avo-choc desserts previously. It was sprinkled with caramelized nuts and edible flowers that elevated it from the everyday to the sublime too. And have we mentioned that all the staff were gorgeous? Perhaps it's not that suitable for a date restaurant after all… Never-the-less, you should still totally go, perhaps with just a book for company. Make a reservation at St Luke's Table

Plate, Shoreditch

As you'd expect from a restaurant in East London, Plate has a dedicated vegan menu - taking any guess work out for the completely plant-based. We started with a selection of bread that's cooked in-house and it was hands-down amongst the best bread we've ever tasted: mushroom brioche, Marmite loaf and a hefty slice of sourdough. Lovely. For main, we opted for an extremely pretty plate of freekeh (food is very easy on the eye at Plate), served with ever-delightful Jerusalem artichoke and mushroom.Dessert was a lush sticky toffee pudding served with a sour cream ice-cream that bit through the sweetness delightfully, all served in a syrupy pool of toffee sauce, the best kind of pool.Vegan pud options include a dairy-free version: sticky toffee and salted caramel pudding with orange sorbet. Fit.It's all served by eager-to-help staff in a great location in buzzing East London. We'll be back.Book a table at Plate Shoreditch.

Ritorno

Looking for somewhere with a bit more of the fancy factor? Italian restaurant Ritorno could be just the ticket for impressing a date or treating yourself. It's not a vegetarian restaurant per-se but there's plenty on the menu to keep meat-swervers happy. There's a vegan soup of the day for starters, but we went for the plump and juicy burrata because there aren't many problems that can't be solved with cheese. We took it with a Prato Fiorito, or white Negroni, one of the best cocktails we've tried this year.We followed with a simple baked gnocchi, dramatically served in a wide copper pot. The drama of the dish was matched by the opulent, blue and gold decor of the restaurant. If you get a chance, ask for a seat at the window so you enjoy the theatre of Covent Garden life while you eat.Desserts change, but the wow factor remains consistent. Feast your eyes on the decadent white chocolate semi-freddo. The dessert cannelloni was a triumph of sweet cream and crunchy hazlenut too.And it's all served by smart, attentive, Italian staff. Buon appetito.Book a table at Ritorno Covent Garden.

YO! Sushi

The perennially popular sushi chain has an impressive 25 vegan plates on the menu - the number goes up to 30 if you allow dairy in your diet - and has a menu for vegans to help you pick the right plates off the belt. It's no exaggeration to say that YO! Sushi's harisami aubergine would be included in our last meal on earth. It's tender, melts in the mouth, and incredibly moreish. We're also big fans off new dish tender stem and sesame - a lovely large does of green veg health, lifted from the mundane by a slick of sesame sauce. The inure taco, pictured below, is not for the faint hearted with its hit of sriracha nestling in the sweet pocket, but all the more welcome on the new menu for the spicy surprise. We also enjoyed some classic cucumber maki - because if you don't have maki were you even at YO? And finished off with some strawberry cheesecake Mochi - an extraordinary, chewy delight.Find a YO! Tibits

See that above? That, friends, is a food BOAT. And, it's fair to say, we were the captains of that buffet ship.

Tibits is a bit different. It's a buffet where you pay by weight. We expected it to be a bit... functional. But on a Wednesday night the lighting was low, the seats were comfortable and there was a delightful dinner destination vibe.

The menu changes, and Tuesdays are 100% plant-based.

Tibits vegan review

You can choose from a hot food selection including tofu au vin (lush), tumeric cauliflower (healthful) and samosas that we forget existed and are still not over it.

There's also cold dishes including a Caesar salad every bit as good as non-vegan ones we've had and a zatar that's honestly one of the best we've ever put in our mouths.

The great thing about buffets? You can try a little bit of everything and we gleefully stuck a little (not that little) bit of three desserts on our plate: sticky toffee pudding, molten chocolate sponge and passion fruit cream - nom, Nom, NOM.
