We’ve all read about the health benefits on drinking green tea but it seems, when drunk in excess, it can have some very negative effects too.

Daily Mail reports that one 16-year-old girl’s green tea habit was so severe it actually caused her to catch hepatitis!

The teen was apparently experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, stomach and joint pains, and, eventually, severe inflammation of the liver.

Doctors initially diagnosed her with a urine infection but after anitbiotics did nothing to soothe her symptoms, and jaundice caused her to slowly turn yellow, they suddenly realised that it was, in fact, hepatitis.

After being questioned by medical staff, the young lady admitted that in a bid to lose weight she to ordered a Chinese green tea online and had been drinking it in excess.

After stopping drinking the green tea and receiving treatment for her liver her hepatitis went down.

If all this is putting you off your daily dose of green tea, don’t panic!

It was a plant substance, called Camellia sinensis, that was at the root of this severe reaction to the tea and according to the medical report, this substance is only ‘readily available from unregulated sources such as the internet.'

You would also need to consume an excessive amount in order for it to have an extreme effect on you.

So if you stick to your usual green tea bags you’ll be completely fine! Drink up!
