Signs of an iron deficiency include:

  • Feeling tired or lacking in energy

  • Feeling out of breath when you normally feel fit

  • Heart palpitations

  • A paler than normal complexion

According to the NHS, anaemia (the medical name for iron deficiency) is when your body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells. Red blood cells help carry oxygen around your body, and when your organs don’t get enough oxygen your health, obviously, suffers.

The most common cause of iron deficiency is diet. Women who suffer from heavy periods and women who are pregnant are most likely to suffer from anaemia through diet alone.

If you suspect you might be suffering from an iron deficiency, visit your local GP where they will more than likely administer a blood test.

Should you be found to have an iron deficiency or suffering from anaemia, your doctor will help you take the next steps to improving your diet/health.

Should the deficiency persist, you may be required to undergo further tests.
