When cutting a circular cake, the go-to move is cutting it in a triangle, right?
WRONG.
According to mathematician Alex Bellos, there’s a much better way to cut and preserve that cake you’ve spent ages baking (or ages queuing in the supermarket) for.
Instead of cutting your cake into triangular pieces, you need to cut it directly down the middle.
Not sure what we mean?
Take a look at his video:
We know what you’re thinking: why didn’t I think of that before?!
Alex explains that when you cut the cake in triangles, you’re leaving the gap created by cutting the cake, which will make the cake dry.
“You’re not maximising the amount of gastronomic pleasure you can make from this cake,” Alex revealed.
He then revealed that the proper way to cut cake was discovered around 100 years ago and showed a science magazine that gave notes as to how best to cut a round cake.
So to preserve that delicious cake you won’t manage to eat in one day, you are supposed to cut a slice through the middle, which creates square slices.
You then push the cake together, wrap an elastic band around the cake and put it in the fridge, so that the next day the cake is still fresh and you can repeat the process until all the cake is gone.
And this means more people can enjoy it too, as you will be cutting smaller portions.
Life changing.
Does anyone else fancy a slice of cake now, too?
