The 36-year-old star, who married Marco Perego in 2013, took Zoe’s last name after they wed, despite it being more traditional for both parties to take the husband’s.
But Saldana has now insisted that she tried to talk her Italian artist partner out of the move, over fears he would be ‘emasculated’ by his Latin community of men.
Marco, who we’re starting to like more and more, replied that he ‘didn’t give a s**t’ what other people thought of their decision.
Responding to the furore surrounding the move, Zoe wrote on her Facebook page: ‘Why is it so surprising, shocking - eventful, even - that a man would take his wife’s surname?
‘Women have never been asked if it's ok for them to give up their names - why doesn’t that make the news?
‘Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers.
‘Let’s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads alongside his partner…
'A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.’
The post was signed off ‘Zoe and Marco’ who are parents to five month old twins Cy and Bowie.
We think this is truly awesome. What’s your take on it?
