Up until now each judge has always been given the girls, the boys, the groups or the over 25s.
But competitiveness between Cheryl Cole and Mel B has allegedly led to the bosses seriously thinking about the big change.
A source told the Daily Star: “This would completely change the show. As Simon [Cowell] is keen to do things differently this year, it’s a real possibility. It would give the live shows a completely new dynamic.”

According to the source, Cheryl, 30, has been asking the producers to give her who she believes to be the strongest category and 39-year-old Mel has insisted she doesn’t want the groups to avoid comparisons with the Spice Girls.
The source continued: “The general consensus is that the show looked stale and ratings dropped. But this would certainly refresh it. It won’t be long before a final decision will be made about the categories.
“The producers are keep to keep Mel and Cheryl happy so there’s a good chance their demands will be met.”
Meanwhile, model Nicola McLean has allegedly claimed that Mel B once asked her to go to the toilet with her so she could see her boobs.

The Sun reported today that Nicola reportedly told a friend how Mel and her husband Stephen Belafonte were at the same party as her in 2009 when the incident occurred.
“She told me she wanted to see my boobs out of my bra and kept pleading that she ‘just needed to see them’ as they were ‘amazing’,” A friend claimed Nicola told them.
However, Nicola turned Mel down as she was pregnant and ‘hadn’t been drinking’. She said: “The night could have ended very differently as it would have been difficult to say no to a Spice Girl.”
