As part of the ongoing phone hacking trial, the Old Bailey was told that Patricia Tierney warned the England footballer before newspaper stories emerged about his ‘suggested use of prostitutes.’

The receptionist at Diva Massage Parlour in Liverpool - told the court she was concerned for the Rooney following reports that he paid to have sex with her in 2004.

Ms Tierney, who denied the claims, said in a statement: “It was alleged I had a sexual encounter with Wayne Rooney and he paid me for sex when I was working at a massage parlour.”

She added: “I do recall Wayne Rooney visiting with a number of other males. Several days later he came on his own.

“This time I pushed him into a room and told him to pull his hat down and get out before he was destroyed and his career was over.”

Notes made by private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who has admitted phone hacking for the News of the World, showed he was investigating Rooney at the time.

Mrs Tierney identified her name and date of birth among Mulcaire’s notes on Rooney and was shown a download from Mulcaire’s computer under the heading “Project Patricia Tierney”.

She said: “I believe this is in relation to the incident at the massage parlour.”

Ms Tierney, 58, added: “I was offered £30,000 for the story but I refused.”

Mulcaire’s notes showed the 28 year-old Manchester United striker’s phone password at the time was ‘Stella Artois.’
