Earlier this year, we heard the news that the Spice Girls were getting back together and the ten year olds in us all squealed with excitement! They were the world’s biggest girl band – arguably, ever! – and their legacy even reaches as far as little girls today who still love to singalong to hits like Wannabe.
However, as the news unfolded it became clear that two members of the original band, Victoria Beckham and Melanie Chisholm, declined to be a part of the reunion, leaving the remaining three members – Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown – to form a new musical group splintering from the original.
The remaining three singers have rebranded as GEM and released a video teaser this summer telling fans to look forward to the return of their childhood favourites.
But when Victoria recently spoke to the Sunday Times Style magazine, she admitted that she wouldn’t be pleased if the girls decided to sing the original Spice Girls songs.
“I do think they should sing their own material though, because what we did in the Spice Girls was so special,” she said.
“If they sang Spice Girls songs I think I might be a bit sad.”
Victoria’s decision not to re-join Geri, Mel B and Emma was the reason behind Mel C’s reluctance to be a part of the comeback, who confessed that she would only take part if it was all five of them.
However, Posh wanted everyone to know that although she wasn’t keen on the girls using Spice Girls hits, she gave the band her blessing.
“Of course, as a new group, I do [wish them luck].”
Although it’s a shame that the full set won’t be reuniting, we are super excited to see what GEM comes up with!
