After the huge success of her husband’s award-nominated Netflix docuseries, it was announced in August that Victoria Beckham would take the helm of her own project with the streamer.
But with production underway, insiders tell Closer that the fashion designer already fears that she’s overstepped the mark with what she’s spilled to the camera, especially where David is concerned.
The source says, ‘David and Vic are constantly ribbing each other and sharing their great sense of humour with fans on social media. But Vic feels panicked after confessing to pals a few of the things she’s joked about relating to David on-camera while filming her Netflix show. She worries that she may have gone too far and he will end up with a bruised ego after watching it.
‘Obviously, David making fun of Vic’s not-so-working-class roots was a highlight from his documentary, and ever since then she’s been trying to think up ways to get her own back. But even she admits that she can get carried away sometimes and forgets that there are some things that David can be thin-skinned about.’
Former England football captain David, 49, won great acclaim for his four-part documentary, Beckham, in October last year, which chronicled his stellar career and life in the spotlight with his wife of 25 years. But the standout moment which quickly achieved internet virality was when the Inter Miami co-president hilariously pleaded with Victoria, 50, to ‘be honest’ after she claimed they were both from working-class backgrounds, eventually leading her to confess that her dad had a Rolls-Royce in the ’80s. The interaction prompted Victoria to create a ‘My dad had a Rolls-Royce’ T-shirt in a nod to the famous moment, and she and David have good-naturedly played into the ‘be honest’ skit on social media since.
In August, after fans had called for Victoria – who shares three sons, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 22, and Cruz, 19, as well as 13-year-old daughter Harper with David – to star in her own documentary, Netflix granted their wishes. The juggernaut announced, ‘In the most Posh news ever, a Victoria Beckham documentary series is now in production! The series will follow her reinvention as a creative director of her own brand – offering exclusive access to Victoria, her fashion and beauty business, and her never-before-seen archives.’
Earlier this month, the mum of four was awarded Harper Bazaar’s Entrepreneur of the Year gong by proud daughter Harper, who branded her famous mum as a ‘truly inspiring woman who means the world to me’.
While it’s unclear whether footage from the celebratory evening will feature in Vic’s forthcoming Netflix project, the small-screen deep-dive is also poised to ‘get up close and personal with the former pop star as she juggles her business and family life’.
And insiders say that the fashion mogul has nervously forewarned David of the instances during filming where she has run away with her conversation.
The source says, ‘There is one topic in particular that has Vic holding her head in her hands – David’s much talked about Knighthood. Their mutual pals believe it should be out of bounds. There are other topics too – like David’s penchant for showing off his buff body – that have had Vic wincing. She’s been seriously regretting getting so loose-lipped on camera to the point she’s had to come clean to David in a bid to do some damage control.
‘But she feels like she was a good sport with everything he said [in Beckham] and is hoping he’ll be the same. So far, David has had a bit of a poker face about it all, so Vic is worried that she won’t know his full reaction until it’s all out in the open, when it could be too late to take back things she said.’
News of Victoria’s documentary was well-received by fans, especially after the success of David’s. ‘What I like about these two is there’s no bulls**t. They aren’t setting out to be liked or loved, there’s no pretence or fakery,’ one enthused. Another wrote, ‘Bet she’s serving looks and tea! Can’t wait for the drama and glam.’
Now, sources say that while Victoria feels she has developed a thick skin, she’s conscious of how taunts towards her husband could be perceived by him and the public.
‘Vic might have to prepare for a bit of fallout if the jokes fall flat or, worse, David becomes a laughing stock because of her quips,’ the insider shares. ‘He’s faced a lot of scrutiny in the past, so Vic would absolutely hate it if anything she has said comes across like that. She’s just feeling quite paranoid about it all as you never know how the public are going to react to something until it’s out there.’
