Dancing on Ice’s Vanessa Bauer has opened up about the eating disorder that dominated her life from the age of 13

The professional figure skater, who has been dragged into dance partner Wes Nelson’s well publicized split from girlfriend Megan Barton Hanson, took to social media to share her struggle with her 117k followers.

“Before I started shows I would have never thought I’d be comfortable in front of the camera in a bikini or much less in underwear,” she wrote, alongside a picture of herself posing in nude undies.

“Every day I was told I am too fat (which I wasn’t!) and it did nothing but making my confidence shrink into nothing!

“At 13, when my skating career started to take off, circumstances, comments and many voices made me fall into a combination of eating disorders. Completely ASHAMED and always wanting to be the best in everything I did, I hid my struggles - for 4 years.”

“I thought I FAILED and it was my very own fault that I got these mental health issues. I was embarrassed at myself and thought these years were a period I will always have to hide because it shows a WEAK SIDE of me.

“I had to STOP SKATING. However, I only got worse without skating and that’s when I realised that figure skating is my biggest PASSION and love. ❤️⛸🔥 I am now unbelievably proud of myself for how far I’ve come.

“By myself and for myself I trained my way back into my passion. Being a pro figure skater travelling around the world DOING WHAT I LOVE became the best therapy!”

Fans flocked to the comments to share words of encouragement and support, with one writing, “Well done for sharing this. More people need to see and hear what others have gone through and come out the other side!! Great post.”

“So touched with your post that I felt compelled to respond and just reiterate, you are not alone, it takes deep emotional intelligence and courage to share your journey,” said another.
