The Springwatch host, who many will also remember from kid’s programme The Really Wild Show, was advised to have both breasts removed after cancer was found in one during a routine mammogram.

48-year-old Michaela described her shock as her diagnosis was handed to her, and that ‘tears started to roll’ as she heard the C word uttered.

However, despite her traumatic ordeal, Strachan said she didn’t feel too emotional about losing her breasts, saying she’d never really celebrated them until it was too late.

‘But knowing I would [lose them] in the next few days, I found myself wearing tight tops and celebrating them. As Joni Mitchell sang, “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.’”’

And Michaela said she doesn’t regret her decision, adding: ‘My story could have been a very different one’ if she hadn’t found the cancer so early.

Michaela’s news comes a year after Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie had a preventative double mastectomy, after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation.

British star Michelle Heaton also took the same action after finding she too was genetically predisposed to breast cancer. Later this year the mum-of-two will also undergo a procedure to remove her ovaries, so she will not contact ovarian cancer in future.
