There will be a noticeable absence from Children In Need this year as it marks the first time the show has aired since Terry Wogan died in 2016.

Current hosts Tess Daly, Greg James, Graham Norton, Ade Adepitan, Shane Richie, Marvin and Rochelle Humes and Russell Kane have some pretty big boots to fill but, respectfully, say they are up to the challenge.

"This year we'd love to raise as much money as we possibly can in honour of the late Sir Terry Wogan," Graham said in a statement ahead of the show airing on BBC One on Friday night.

And while it is almost impossible to pick out the best moments of Terry's Children In Need history (he really lit up the screen every time he appeared) we have selected five fine moments from the past three-and-a-half decades of the treasured TV show.

Pop Light

In 1995, Sir Terry was given his chance to take the spotlight in a fully choreographed pop performance of his Number 21 charting 1978 single, 'The Floral Dance'. The Irish presenter looked like he was in his element as he sang the early 20th Century folk tune over a dance track with an army of backing dancers.

Strip Teased

In one of the more risqué acts in Children In Need history, Terry was joined by Joanna Lumley for a sketch. "Technical issues" meant a planned segment showing swimmer Sharon Davies stripping in aid of the charity was forced to be abandoned. But showing her own 'charitable' side, Joanna decided to strip instead – much to the embarrassment/pleasure of Sir Terry.

Own Punchline

In a 2009 sketch, Terry and co-host Tess Daly were replaced by impressionists John Culshaw and Debra Stevenson who did pretty spot-on impersonations of the duo. When the real Terry and Tess did emerge from backstage, they went along for the laughs by sending themselves up – to the delight of viewers.

Soft Speaking

While Children In Need does a brilliant job of entertaining viewers with its mix of comedy, live music, and sketches, it also deals with some pretty sobering material. Established in 1980 to offer aid to disadvantaged children and young people, the great work done by the charity sometimes touches on some tragic tales – like the story of Molly Field and her family.

Molly sadly lost her life to cancer, aged eight. The story her family shared is deeply moving – with Terry's soft voiceover ensuring additional dignity and respect as the bereavement charity services Children In Need helps fund were discussed.

Wogan Style

While Psy may have won over the world in 2012 with his oddly infectious song 'Gangnam Style' and equally ridiculous dance routine, Terry seemed pretty unimpressed. But watching the broadcast legend have a go at the dance routine is bound to bring a smile to anyone's face.

Terry might be missed from future Children In Need broadcasts, but he will never be forgotten.
