Thunderbirds co-creator and star Sylvia Anderson was 88-years-old at the time of her death.

She passed away at her Buckinghamshire home, after a brief battle with an undisclosed illness.

Confirming the sad news to the press, her daughter said she was "a mother and a legend", who would be sadly missed.

Dee Anderson said: "Her intelligence was phenomenal but her creativity and tenacity unchallenged.

“She was a force in every way.”

Sylvia famously co-created the hit children’s television series with her late husband Gerry, who passed away in 2012 after suffering from Alzheimer’s.

They based the Lady Penelope puppet on Sylvia’s appearance - and the talented dressmaker, journalist and political scientist also provided the voice for the puppet.

The success of Thunderbirds led to two feature films and a toy and merchandise empire.

They went on to work on other famous shows such as Stingray, Fireball XL5, and Captain Scarlet.

After their divorce in 1981, the couple went their separate ways - and Sylvia went on to become the head of programming for HBO, not to mention writing several books.

However Sylvia always found the time to do charity work - especially for Breast Cancer Care, and, according to her family, “would always find time to take care of people who were suffering or in need of support”.

Sylvia leaves behind her daughter, Dee Anderson, and her son, Gerry Anderson Junior, as well as four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Our thoughts are with them at this sad time.
