Singer, songwriter and all-round 80s icon George Michael has died at the age of 53.

His manager, Micheal Lippman, confirmed that the star passed away of heart failure at his home on Christmas Day.

A statement released by the stars family, read: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

George, who was born in Finchley, North London, shot to fame in 80s pop group Wham!, and went on to have massive success as a solo artist, winning two Grammys and countless other awards.

Soon after the news of his tragic death broke, his famous friends took to Twitter to express their grief.
