Simon Cowell on Cheryl ‘taking a year out to have a baby’: ‘I didn’t with Eric’

Simon Cowell has taken a swipe at Cheryl Fernandez-Versini for considering taking a year off to have children.

Cheryl, 31, recently mused that she’d have to decide between having a baby and The X Factor next year, insisting ‘you can’t do both’.

But boss Simon, 55, dismissed Cheryl’s claims, telling The Sun: “Well, I had one.”

Despite this Simon admitted he hasn’t yet asked Cheryl or Mel B, 39, to return to the show next year.

He said: “It’s too early to say. Whenever you ask anyone at this stage in the competition whether they want to come back or not, you’re knackered – and the idea of doing it again is, like ‘My God, I couldn’t go through this again.

“I like to let people finish the show, relax over the New Year and then see how they feel. So I wouldn’t ask Cheryl the question this year.

“But one thing I say to all these judges now is that it’s only important to come back if you want to come back for the right reasons, which is you want to find stars, you want to mentor people.

“Yes, the money is always a factor. But Cheryl’s got a lot of money. So has Mel, and she’s been after this job for five years.”

Speaking during a recent interview, Cheryl said she would have to really think about if she is ready to have children with new husband Jean-Bernard next year.

She said: “Next year is going to have to be the time when I reflect on what I’ve done and think about what I want to do. I’m not ruling it out.”
