Debbie Reynolds has died a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher.

The American actress passed away at the age of 84 just one day after her Star Wars actress daughter.

The star’s son Todd Fisher said the stress of his sister’s death had been too much for their mother and she was rushed to hospital with a suspected stroke.

Debbie had said in her last words that she wanted to be with Carrie and she was said to have been “distraught” after Carrie suffered cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles last week.

Confirming the news, Todd told Variety: “She wanted to be with Carrie.”

The family are now understood to be making plans for the funeral.

Debbie was perhaps most well known for playing Kathy Selden in 1952 musical Singing’ In The Rain alongside Gene Kelly.

Fellow US actress Debra Messing, who played Debbie’s on-screen daughter in Will and Grace, paid tribute and wrote in an statement: “A legend of course. The epitome of clean-cut American optimism, dancing with Gene Kelly as an equal, a warrior woman who never stopped working.”

She added on Instagram: “Debbie went to be with Carrie. She always worried about her. Carrie left too soon and now they are together again.”

Joan Collins tweeted: “Truly heartbroken to hear DebbieReynolds1 has died. She was a wonderfully warm friend and colleague.”

Star Trek actor William Shatner wrote: “Debbie Reynolds was one of the last of Hollywood Royalty. It breaks my heart that she is gone. I’d hoped that my grieving was done for 2016.”

Just days earlier, Debbie had paid tribute to her own daughter after her death, writing on Facebook: “Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talent of my beloved and amazing daughter.

“I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carrie’s mother.”
