It was recently confirmed that Shayne, 30, will join the show as Aidan Connor, the cousin of Kym Marsh's character Michelle.

Following rumours that the soap is in trouble, Shayne told The Sun: "Shows need refreshing. It's all about new characters.

"If you're being charming and cheeky, like Aidan, then people will like you. He has great family values. We're similar in that he's grown up on an estate and is half-Irish."

It's been confirmed that stars Alison King and Craig Charles are quitting the soap and a drop in the ratings has resulted in 'crisis' claims.

But Shayne dismissed the rumours, adding: "I don't think Corrie is in crisis. It's nonsense."

Former Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding is also joining the show later this year.

Producer Stuart Blackburn said of her casting: "Sarah is proving to be a gifted and exciting actor and I'm absolutely delighted to have her on board.

"The viewers are in for a treat as her character will be right at the heart of a massive new storyline for the Barlows."
