Despite speculation that the star was in rehab for substance addition - the actress has admitted she was actually receiving Chemotherapy for a devastating illness.

The 23-year-old revealed that she suffers from Lupus - an autoimmune disorder which leaves sufferers with fatigue, extremely painful joints and rashes on their body.

Terrifyingly, many sufferers of the disorder often die within months of being diagnosed, due to complications arising from damage to their internal organs and tissues.

‘I could have had a stroke’ Gomez revealed, as she spoke about her chemo treatment for the disease.

‘I wanted so badly to say: “You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.”’

It was reported in 2014 that Selena may have been at rehab recovering from substance abuse, but that was actually far from the truth.

For this reason, as well as other attacks on her and ex boyfriend Justin Bieber, Selana slammed the tabloid press, adding:

‘I’ve been working since I was seven. I’ve been a Unicef ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story.’

Lupus is a chronic condition where the body’s immune system attacks normal tissue.

As a result, the spine, kidney, heart, brain and lungs can be damaged.

Despite being relatively common, little is known about the devastating condition, which currently has no cure.

Common treatments include chemotherapy and drugs designed to suppress the immune system.
