Sam, 36, took the Christmas number one spot with her cover of Demi Lovato’s Skyscraper on Sunday and she told the Official Charts Company that we won’t have to wait long for more music from her.

She said: “2014 is going to be a huge year for me. Basically, I’m in the studio pretty much straight away. We’re hoping to get an album out for spring. On the album, I’m going to try and do things a little bit differently.”

The former prison officer said she plans to record original songs, along with some covers.

She said: “I’m going to try and do some stuff of my own and get some songs out there that are originals. We’re getting our head together in the next few weeks just to see what we can come up with.

“I’m really excited and I’m just ready to knuckle down and get this album out.”

Despite her plans to include covers on her album, Sam revealed that Simon Cowell has told her to avoid making the record sound cheesy and to make sure that she is in control.

Sam said: “Simon doesn’t want me to go down the cheesy route. He told me, ‘when you talk about the album, don’t just sit there and say OK. Don’t let them tell you what to do. You need to research and have ideas.’”
