Simon also gushed about her return – for which she is reportedly earning £1.5million – hinting that he hoped the series would be as successful as last time they worked together.

He said: “I am so happy that Cheryl has agreed to join The X Factor again. The last time we worked together in the UK was incredible and produced some really successful artists. Obviously the plan is to do the same… so it’s back to work!”

Cheryl was a judge from 2008 to 2010, with a brief stint on the US version in 2011

Cheryl originally judged the show from 2008 to 2010 and during that time she won twice with acts Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry.

However, after signing up to judge the US version of the show in 2011 she was famously sacked just weeks into her role.
