The Royle Family’s Caroline Aherne dies aged 52

The Royle Family writer and actress Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away from cancer at age 52.

Caroline announced that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer just two years ago, having already suffered with eye and bladder cancer previously.

Not only did Aherne have a leading role in sitcom The Royle Family, she also appeared in The Fast Show and narrated Channel 4's Gogglebox.

Her publicist Neil Reading announced her passing earlier today:

"Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.

The Bafta award-winning writer and comedy actor died earlier today at her home in Timperley, Greater Manchester. She was 52.

The family ask for privacy at this very sad time".

Her fellow comedians and friends poured in to pay tribute to the star, with David Walliams tweeting "Absolutely devastating news about Caroline Aherne. A true comedy genius, her work was equally funny & touching".

Comedian Sarah Millican wrote "So sad. What a wonderful talent she was".

Fans also flooded in on social media to also pay respects to the actress, one commenting "How much you have made me laugh. Mrs Merton. The Royle Family. Gogglebox...Comedy Genius. RIP lady #carolineaherne" and another "RIP #carolineaherne Always enjoyed your work especially Royle Family #gonetoosoon".
