Ron Atkinson gets a formal warning from CBB following racist ‘bomb’ remark

Just four days into his stay in the Celebrity Big Brother house, Ron Atkinson has received a telling off after an offensive reference to terrorism.

The 74-year-old received a formal warning after he turned to Danielle Marr, who was wearing a jumper over her head, and said:

“You’re not carrying a bomb with you?”

When the Irish businesswoman ignored his comment he continued:

“No, when you put it around like that.”

The former football pundit was referring to Danielle’s jumper looking like a burqa or head scarf, which is often worn by women in Islamic traditions.

His comment was seen by Big Brother as a sweeping and ignorant comment linking Muslims and suicide bombers.

Shortly after the incident Ron was called to the Diary Room, where he was given a formal warning and told that if he made one more comment he would be removed from the house.

Ron responded to Big Brother, admitting that his comment was a “complete oversight.”

He added,

“I came in determined not to upset anybody. One of my prime tasks was to make sure I didn’t upset, so I’m very aware of what I am saying.”

This isn’t the first time Ron has landed himself in trouble.

Back in 2004 he was overheard making a racist comment about footballer Marcel Desailly, calling him a “f_ing lazy n_*’.

That same year it was reported that he made derogatory remarks about Chinese women, supposedly saying:

“I can't understand why there is such a population problem in China as they have the best contraception going: Chinese women are the ugliest in the world.”
