As revealed through a series of biographies in the early 1990s, the Princess of Wales' bulimia began around the same time she got engaged to Prince Charles in 1981. "Bulimia started the week after we got engaged," Diana later said in tapes obtained by NBC. "My husband put his hand on my waistline and said: 'Oh, a bit chubby here, aren't we?' That triggered off something in me. "I remember the first time I made myself sick, I was so thrilled because I thought right, this was the release of tension."

As the Mercedes sped away from the Ritz it was quickly pursued by paparazzi photographers on motorbikes. The car travelled through busy Paris traffic, before changing route and entering the underpass of the Pont De Alma tunnel. It was here that it clipped a white Fiat Uno, skidding and crashing into the tunnel's thirteenth pillar. The car was sent careering across the underpass and coming to rest facing the wrong direction. Diana - who had, somewhat unusually for her, not been wearing a seatbelt - initially survived the crash, but later died at a Parisian hospital as a result of her injuries. Dodi and Henry Paul were also killed in the crash.

Prince Charles proposed on 6 February 1981, and Lady Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks. It wasn't until after she had picked out her engagement ring - the same sapphire ring now worn by Duchess Catherine - that the couple made their engagement public. Asked how she would cope with a dramatic change to her life she said: "With Prince Charles beside me I cannot go wrong." He added: "I'm delighted and frankly amazed that Diana is prepared to take me on."

On 5th November 1981, the Princess' first pregnancy was officially announced - but, 12 weeks later, she fell down a staircase. The royal gynaecologist Sir George Pinker was summoned from London. He found that although she had suffered severe bruising, her baby was - thankfully - unharmed. In the private Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, on 21 June 1982, the Princess gave birth to her and the Prince's first son and heir, William Arthur Philip Louis. She was one of the first royals to break with protocol and give birth at a hospital, rather than at home in the palace. Describing the event, Earl Spencer, Diana's father, said: "It has been the most harrowing. It was a particularly slow birth. A very worrying day."

In 1992, Andrew Orton released a scandalous book about the Princess of Wales, which claimed that she had attempted suicide on several occasions and was severely depressed. "It is not hearsay. It is what the Princess of Wales has told her friends about what happened to her in 1982, in the early 80s, and the last suicide attempt I think was in 1986," the author claimed. Buckingham Palace would not comment on any specific claims, and said Princess Diana did not co-operate with the biography in any way whatsoever. Shortly after the book's release, Diana was seen breaking down in tears at a public engagement in Liverpool.
