June Steenkamp, who lost her 29-year-old daughter when Oscar Pistorius shot at her through a locked bathroom door, said the new verdict shows ‘respect for Reeva,’ adding that she feels justice has finally been done.
‘We’ve got justice, we’ve got respect for Reeva, we’ve got respect for women’ Mrs Steenkamp said to Sky News this week.
‘I really don't care how long it is, as long as he pays for what he's done and takes responsibility for what happened. He's got to take responsibility for what he's done,’ she said.
On Thursday, the world was left reeling after the Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa convicted Pistorius of murder, a year after he was found not guilty of the charge.
The Paralympian, 29, has served one year of his five year sentence - after being found guilty of culpable homicide in October 2014.
But now the athlete, who was meant to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, will have to return to prison to be sentenced again.
The minimum sentence for murder in the country is 15 years.
Oscar’s agent said the runner was ‘devastated’ by the new conviction.
