After nearly three years of the explosive Wagatha Christie saga, Rebekah Vardy is once again embroiled in another battle with a WAG after branding Annie Kilner – the wife of Manchester City footballer Kyle Walker – a “doormat” and accusing her of “playing the victim”. And now insiders say that the new feud has left Rebekah’s husband Jamie “frustrated”.
A source says, “It was a relief for Becky and Jamie when all the Wagatha Christie furore calmed down. But this new war has really brought back the stress and strain of all that they went through.”
Becky, 41, accused Annie – whose husband Kyle had come under scrutiny after CCTV footage seemed to show him flashing and kissing another woman at a bar – of “attacking her”, after insiders said that Annie, 30, thought Becky had made a dig via an Instagram post.
Becky had originally written, “The gift that keeps on giving” on her social media, as reports about Kyle dominated the headlines. Annie then wrote a cryptic Instagram post reading, “I think it’s important to remember that no matter how good you are to people, it won’t make them good to you.”
But Becky then hit back in a less cryptic message, “Great at playing the victim is our Annie! I think she needs to focus with what’s going on in her own life instead of trying to attack me by bringing me into her drama. Believe me had it been about her I would have tagged her! She’s obsessed.”
Accompanying the post was Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal song, which includes the lyric, “Annie are you OK?”
The drama had several fans commenting, “Is this Wagatha Christie 2.0?” and “Why is Becky wading into this?”
And insiders say that it’s not only Becky who is annoyed and upset about being dragged into the drama, her husband of six years Jamie – who loyally stood by her side throughout her Wagatha Christie court case last summer – is also said to be unhappy.
A source says, “It’s been a horrendous few days for Becky, and Jamie is equally dismayed. He has to put up with vile chants and abuse about Becky every time he plays football, and is having to see her plastered over the papers again. He’s of course supportive, but frustrated that there is yet more unnecessary drama.”
Becky first made headlines in 2016 when she married footballer Jamie – who at the time played for England – and they now have a blended family, which includes their three children, Sofia, eight, Finley, six, and three-year-old Olivia, plus Ella, 11, from Jamie’s previous relationship, and Megan, 17, and Taylor, 11, Becky’s eldest two.
But in October 2019, Becky became a household name when Coleen – wife of Wayne Rooney – accused Becky of leaking stories about her to the press. Becky denied the claims and took Coleen to court for defamation, but a judge ruled that Coleen’s accusation was “substantially true”.
Ever since, the Leicester City striker, 36, has had to endure chants and taunts at football matches. And insiders say that while Jamie is supportive of his wife, it’s stress they could do without.
The source says, “He’s really angry at the impact this has had on Becky. He feels she’s become an easy target for abuse after the Wagatha ruling and he’s determined to protect her.”
Closer previously reported that moving abroad was not off the cards for the couple – who faced more heartache recently when their home gym burnt down in a fire – depending on where Jamie’s career takes him next.
And the insider adds, “It’s been a tough few years for them. There have been times in the last six months that Jamie has been tempted to suggest a fresh start in another country as he doesn’t know if he can take much more. But, at the same time, this is their home and neither Becky nor Jamie feel as if they should be forced out by others who want to make their lives difficult.”
