Back in July 2022, fans were gripped by one of the biggest ever celeb feuds as the spectacular libel case between Coleen Rooney, 38, and Rebekah Vardy, 42, reached the High Court.
Coleen – dubbed ‘Wagatha Christie’ because of her expert-level sleuthing – accused Rebekah, the wife of Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy, of leaking stories about her and her family to the press, a claim that was eventually found to be ‘substantially true’. Rebekah followed Coleen’s private Instagram account where Coleen frequently posted updates about her children — Kai, 14, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and six-year-old Cass.
Coleen, whose husband Wayne Rooney recently began managing Plymouth Argyle F.C., came out triumphant in the trial, with a judge ordering Rebekah to cover 90% of Coleen’s legal fees. After her victory, Coleen said, ‘The relief was everything’.
However, Rebekah dragged Coleen back to courtroom for round two as her lawyer, Jamie Carpenter KC, challenged the ‘sheer magnitude’ of the legal costs claimed by Coleen from their 2022 trial.
Part of these fees listed by Coleen’s team included ‘a stay at the Nobu Hotel, incurring substantial dinner and drinks charges as well as mini bar charges’ as well as over 30 consultations with her lawyer which added up to over £500,000.
The final part of the Wagatha Christie case – a term that was actually trademarked by Rebekah shortly after the libel case – is now closed, as last week a judge ruled that Coleen’s legal team had not committed any misconduct, meaning that Rebekah may have to shell out £1.6m – not including the costs of this second case.
