Born on Monday 23 April at 11.01am, his birth was announced via Kensington Palace with a statement which read: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs. The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."

The Duchess was admitted to the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in London's Paddington before 6am on Monday morning, with the press informed at 8.30am. Both Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also born here, as were Princes William and Harry.

The child is fifth-in-line to the throne, pushing Prince Harry down the line of succession one position. His birth was historic, as following a change in the law before the birth of elder brother Prince George, girls were given the same rights as boys in the order of succession, meaning that he will not take precedence over his elder sister Princess Charlotte. He is the Queen's sixth great-grandchild.
