Charlotte Brosnan, a mother-of-two, died from the same disease that killed her mother Cassandra, Pierce’s first wife, at the same age 20 years ago.
The 60 year-old actor said last night: ‘On June 28 my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer.
‘She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean.
‘Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.
‘We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.’
Charlotte was Pierce’s stepdaughter from his marriage to his first wife, actress Cassandra Harris, who he was with from 1980 until her death in 1991.
The actor adopted Charlotte and her brother Christopher after their father died in 1986 and they took his surname. Piers and Cassandra went on to have another son, Sean, in 1983.
Pierce, who later re-married and had two sons with journalist Keely Shaye Smith, has previously spoken about drawing on his experience of coping with Cassandra’s illness and death to play a widower in his latest film Love Is All You Need.
Speaking to a UK newspaper earlier this year, he said: ‘To watch someone you love have their life eaten away – bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease – becomes an indelible part of your psyche.’
Charlotte is reported to have battled drug addiction and depression in her early 30s, checking into the Priory Clinic three times. Her brother Christopher has also reportedly battled drug and alcohol problems.
She leaves behind her husband Alex Smith and children Isabella, 15, and Lucas, eight.
