Social media can, when used for good, be a wonderful place to find and share interesting information and articles - as well as communicate with people from all over the world.
And, thanks to the likes of Twitter and Facebook, people have also been given a unique opportunity to chat to and follow their celebrity idols.
But it also, sadly, allows online trolls the chance to harass, abuse, and threaten them as well.
Silver fox Phillip Schofield fell foul to one such Twitter troll earlier this week, when they suggested that it was only a matter of time before the popular television presenter would kill himself.
They wrote: “Tragically, it's surely only a matter of time before @Schofe realises the utter pointlessness of his existence & takes his own life.”
Deciding he couldn’t let it slip, Phil outed the troll on Twitter by sharing the post with over 3.5million followers.
Cue an absolute deluge of messages from his most dedicated fans, all of whom were furious to hear that their beloved Phil had been attacked online.
One wrote: “Who the hell is this numpty??? @Schofe are you OK? I think you're brilliant!”
Another added: “Take no notice Phillip, you’re the bigger person. You know your fans love you.”
But Phil, as usual, managed to keep his sunny sense of humour about it all.
After being told that he shouldn’t feed the trolls, he replied jokingly: “It’s not feeding the trolls it's lifting up the stone they live under and briefly shining an exposing light on them.”
Amazing.
The original tweeter, however, doesn’t seem all too bothered by the furore he’s caused.
He wrote simply: “It appears that @Schofe & many of his followers don't understand the meaning of 'tragically', which is all rather, umm, tragic really.”
