We love Paul O'Grady here at Closer, so we were shocked to hear that the beloved telly star is in hospital awaiting heart surgery.

"I think I am going to be out of the game for quite a while. They are taking me in for surgery tomorrow"

The talkshow host is in hospital for an operation, according to reports, after heart problems left him unable to take his ITV1 programme to air on Monday night.

News reports at the Liverpool Echo said Paul wrote in a text message: "I've had an angina attack and need a few days' rest in hospital.

"I think I am going to be out of the game for quite a while. They are taking me in for surgery tomorrow."

Admitting his concern for Paul, his friend Pete Price told the same publication: "I just love him to bits, and he has been overdoing it.

"He has just come back from Africa doing some work for a new TV show next year, and then there are all his animals and all the other things he does.

"When I saw he wasn't on TV I texted to ask what had happened and he told me about it. He is a total workaholic, and I have told him he needs to take things easy."

"After two heart attacks I'm now happy to get through the day"

Paul O'Grady, who proved he can act as well as present during a recent stint on Holby City, has already had two heart attacks. And he previously revealed he has 12 stents in his heart to keep the blood flowing, admitting: "After two heart attacks I'm now happy to get through the day.

"The worst thing you can do is to sit and fret. I take tablets and have check-ups every eight months."

Paul was replaced on Monday night by the singer Michael Ball, who told the studio audience: "Paul's not feeling very well tonight, so I'm standing in for him."

And, according to Twitter, Steve Mulhern will be standing in for Paul when the show airs tonight at 5pm on ITV1.

We really hope Paul O'Grady gets well soon and we wish him a speedy recovery.
