The former England footballer is believed to have been involved in a spat with a photographer when the 'attack' took place.

News of the incident comes as Paul, 47, is fighting a battle with alcohol addiction, which he recently opened up about.

He told the Mirror: "I know I can overcome this. I am an alcoholic so I am taking one day at a time, but I will get there."

Paul starred in a documentary last year, during which he voiced his fears that he would return to drinking.

Last month he admitted to hitting the drink after he was threatened with eviction from his flat.

He said at the time: "Up until a few weeks ago, I was doing great. I have an illness and I had a bad moment. Now I want to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Paul has been facing his battle with drink and drugs publicly since 2009, when he first opened up about his experiences.

He was previously sentenced under the Mental Health Act, after he got the point of snorting cocaine and drinking up to a litre of gin a day.

Bianca Gascoigne recently took to Twitter to hit back at trolls targeting her stepfather.

She wrote: "There are some sick twisted people out there have some compassion don't know why people feel the need to be so nasty & have opinions they know nothing about [sic]."
