While the pandemic and lockdown left people feeling isolated and separate, this week will see the nation coming together to celebrate what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday.

The occasion will touch millions of people, not just here in the UK but around the world. A commemorative statue of the late Princess – commissioned by her two sons in 2017 – will be unveiled outside the gates of Kensington Palace, which was Diana’s home until she tragically died on 31 August 1997 in a car crash with her then-boyfriend Dodi Fayed. As the nation went into mourning, her funeral, on 6 September 1997, was watched by a huge 31 million people globally.

Hailed as the first of the “modern” royals, Diana, who was just 36 when she died, forged her own path through the traditionally stuffy image of life in the palace. Though her life was often troubled, especially following her separation from Prince Charles in 1992 and their divorce four years later, she was much loved by the public, dubbed “the People’s Princess” for her relatability, kindness and charity work. She was pivotal in raising awareness around the AIDS pandemic, notably holding the hands of people with the illness in public at a time when there was a lot of stigma around it.

And her former butler of 10 years, Paul Burrell – who Diana once described as her “rock” – gives Closer an insight into what he thinks the late Princess would be doing now, had she survived. He believes that charity work would still be very close to her heart.

Paul says, “On her 60th birthday this week, I’m sure many people will wonder what Diana would be doing if she had lived.

“I’ve no doubt that she’d still be working – she’d still be doing all she could to make the world better. She’d have been at the heart of everything with the pandemic, doing all she could to help. She would have been there in the thick of it. I know she would have also made strides with her charity work, and probably broken even more boundaries. We lost her so early and there could have been so much more greatness from her.”

The day will no doubt be bittersweet, as while her charity work and iconic status will be celebrated, there will be sadness, too, that she did not see her sons Prince William and Prince Harry grow up, marry and have children of their own.

And Paul says that Diana’s role as grandmother would have been the most important one to her.

He says, “It’s heartbreaking to think of Diana missing out on meeting her grandchildren. They would have been her world. She would have absolutely adored every one of them, especially Charlotte, as she seems to be so feisty and strong-willed.

“The grandchildren are all different and, with Archie and Lilibet growing up in America, they will grow in different ways. Of course, George is heir to the throne – but Diana would have treated every one of them the same.”

In his book A Royal Duty, released in 2006, Paul wrote that Princess Diana had been contemplating buying a house in Malibu shortly before her death – in an eerie foresight of her son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s move there 23 years later.

Paul now says that, like Harry, Diana saw the United States as an escape. But he believes she’d have been devastated at the divide – geographically and emotionally – between her boys now.

He adds, “Diana loved America and she was looking at a place in Malibu before she died. She loved it for the freedom it could give her – of course, she would still be well-known, but she’d have more privacy. She’d have loved for the boys to have spent some time there, with the amazing weather. She shared the same desire as Harry to escape and have a freedom they didn’t have in the UK.

“But California would never have been her permanent home – it would have been a part-time home. She loved Britain and she really understood the monarchy and her place in it, even though she was no longer married to Charles.

Paul Burrell on Prince Harry's engagement to Meghan Markle: "This is love"

“She wasn’t interested in the glitz and glamour of LA – she only wanted to be on a red carpet if her being at the event was doing some good and raising awareness, not just for the sake of it or the fame.

“And family always came first, so she’d never have permanently moved so far across the Atlantic and been away from her sons or grandchildren. Family would have been her total priority – so that’s where she and Harry differ.

“She’d be absolutely heartbroken over what’s played out between the boys. She’d just want them to think of her and put aside their differences and realise life is too short to fight.”
