His character’s death in Grey’s Anatomy was, without a doubt, one of the most shocking TV moments of all time.

And it has been rumoured for a while that Patrick Dempsey was written out of the show due to his behaviour on set.

However US magazine In Touch has now shockingly claimed that the actor was sacked for having an affair with a young intern - something which the 49-year-old has now vehemently denied.

“Ellen Pompeo [who plays Meredith Grey] found out and was angry because she’s close friends with Jillian, so of course, she told her,” the insider was quoted as saying in the print issue of the magazine.

They then went on to add that the situation led to McDreamy’s death on the show in April after the actress spilled what she knew to the show’s creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes.

“Shonda has no patience for that kind of behaviour,” they alleged.

However a spokesperson for Patrick gas blasted the rumours as false, saying: "This is not true.

“It's an absurd story."

The online version of article, which ran under the headline ‘Ellen got Patrick fired’, has since been deleted from In Touch’s website.

Meanwhile Patrick, who has three children with his ex wife Jillian, hasn’t commented on the reason behind his explosive departure,.

However he has said that he’s happy with the way the character was written out.

“It’s just kind of happened,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be.

“Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out.”
