Anyone who watched Chelsea Handler’s talk show knows only too well that her brand of humour can be a bit below the belt.
But even her more devoted followers were left shocked when she made a joke appearing to trivialise miscarriage.
Sharing a picture of a smashed up pomegranate on Instagram and Twitter, the 40-year-old wrote: “It’s impossible to enjoy eating a pomegranate when the end result is this. #miscarriage. #cleaningupforyourcleaninglady.”
To make matters worse, the joke happened to fall on October 15 which is widely regarded as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.
Unsurprisingly, some of those who came across the tweet were less than impressed by it.
One fan responded: “As a mother who lost her twins this year maybe you need to rethink your disgusting comment about a couple of cry babies because today and everyday we actually do cry about the babies we lost!”
Another typed furiously: “I pray you never or anyone close to has to endure the loss many couples not only women endure!”
Despite the uproar, many defended Chelsea reasoning that her brand of comedy has always been controversial.
In an attempt to gloss over the drama, Chelsea shared another image but of her dog, but wrote next to it: “There's a thing called national miscarriage day????? I am just reading about myself online. I did not remove a hashtag. My asst does that when I do something bad. Me having a pomegranate and infant loss are not directly related. Jesus. Love, chunk.”
