A UK newspaper has reported that the couple - estimated to be worth £150million – negotiated the settlement through Nigella’s lawyer who lodged the divorce document with the court last Friday.
Experts have speculated that Nigella and Charles - who shared a £12 million home in Chelsea – were likely to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement when they wed in 2003. But the pair have agreed never to publicly disclose the terms of the divorce or financial settlements.
According to the newspaper, Charles opted against hiring a lawyer himself to deal directly with Nigella’s lawyer – Fiona Shackleton.
The newspaper’s source revealed: ‘[Charles] and Nigella agreed – via Fiona Shackleton – to a speedy divorce,’ and claimed: ‘He did not hire a lawyer himself.’
According to the source, ‘an agreement was reached with no dispute’ and the pair ‘agreed never to make public the terms of the divorce or financial settlements.’
The news comes five weeks after the couple were caught in a public scandal when Charles was photographed grabbing his wife’s throat.
Despite accepting a police caution for the incident, the art-collector later dismissed the incident as a ‘playful tiff.’
While Nigella has yet to comment, Charles last week made a statement announcing that he and his TV chef wife were to end their 10-year marriage.
In the statement, he denied that he’d ever physically abused his wife, saying: ‘I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.’
Nigella has two children - Cosima, 19, and 17-year-old Bruno from her marriage to journalist John Diamond, who passed away in 2001, whilst Saatchi has 19-year-old daughter Phoebe from a previous marriage.
