In a rare moment of sincerity, Nicki Minaj, 31, decided to tackle a very serious topic in her acceptance speech at the BET awards last night.

"I really thought I was about to die"

Winning "Best Female Rap Artist" for the fifth year in a row, the Young Money signee opened up about a recent near-death experience - and confessed that she chose not to call an ambulance, all because she didn't want to see it end up on the news.

Collecting the honour at the BET Awards, she said: "The other day, literally I didn't tell anybody this, I really thought I was about to die.

"Like, I was saying my prayers to die.

"And I didn't even want to call the ambulance because I thought, 'Well if I call the ambulance, it's going to be on TMZ.'"

She added: "I would rather sit there and die."

However, despite the shocking nature of her claims, Nicki added a positive spin to it, revealing that her brush with death has convinced her to remain true to herself.

"And it made me realise I don't care what anybody got to say. I'm going to do me."
