Yesterday, TMZ released previously unseen footage filmed by a security camera inside an elevator at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City.

The video shows Ray Rice and Janay Palmer – who went on to get married a month later – engaged in a heated exchange as they enter the lift.

Rice is then seen violently swinging his fist into Janay's face, causing her to hit her head on the elevator rail and lose consciousness.

The NFL player, who went on to drag his then-fiancée from the elevator, was initially only issued with a two-game ban.

But now, after footage of the horrifying attack went public, which occurred in February, his contract has been terminated.

Rice's team The Ravens sent out a one-sentence release: "The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this afternoon."

The NFL also took action, saying on Twitter that Commissioner "Roger Goodell has announced that based on new video evidence that became available today he has indefinitely suspended Ray Rice."

Goodell's plan includes at least six games for a first offence and a potential league ban for a second offence.

Meanwhile President Obama has condemned Ray Rice in the strongest terms, releasing the following statement via White House spokesman Josh Earnest:

"The President is the father of two daughters. And like any American, he believes that domestic violence is contemptible and unacceptable in a civilised society.

"Hitting a woman is not something a real man does, and that's true whether or not an act of violence happens in the public eye, or, far too often, behind closed doors.

"Stopping domestic violence is something that's bigger than football – and all of us have a responsibility to put a stop to it."

Rice, who was found guilty of assault, chose to take part in an anger management programme in May, in a bid to avoid jail time.

He said at the time: "I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life. Me. She can do no wrong. She’s an angel.

"My daughter is 2 years old now. One day she's going to know the power of Google. Me having to explain that to her, what happened that night, that's something I have to live with the rest of my life.

He added: "I know that's not who I am as a man. That's not who my mom raised me to be. If anybody knows me, they know I was raised by a single parent, and that was my mother.

"I let her down, I let my wife down, I let my daughter down. I let my wife's parents down. I let the whole Baltimore community down. I let my teammates down. I let so many people down because of 30 seconds of my life that I know I can't take back."
