Love Island star Montana Brown has opened up about her mental health after appearing on the show in a new video for Mental Health Awareness Week.

Montana, who starred on the show’s third series in 2017, answered questions sent in by fans and revealed that entering the Love Island villa triggered her anxiety.

“When I first left Love Island, that's when I started to get anxiety," she said.

“So that was the first time I ever experienced anxiety and stress, really, in those situations is after I left Love Island and I shot to fame... which was obviously fantastic but it does come with downfalls.

“My mental health problems now, they're a little bit different. I wouldn't say they were mental health problems, it's just dealing with grief, and the way that I've dealt with that is with a myriad of different things."

She then spoke about grieving for close friend Mike Thalassitis, who appeared alongside her in Love Island, after he died by suicide earlier this year.

Montana revealed that she initially felt ‘angry’ and ‘upset’ over Mike’s ‘selfish decision’ but that writing down her feelings as if they were letters to him helped her process her emotions.

She said: “The first week or two weeks, it was really, really helpful for me because I was writing everything down.

“I was getting my anger out on the page and it was very therapeutic for me and I felt like it relieved me of some of my anger.”

Following the deaths of Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon, Love Island bosses confirmed that they were revising their aftercare process and recently detailed the increased support that future contestants will receive, including training on financial management and social media, as well as a minimum of eight therapy sessions and at least 14 months of proactive contact.

Love Island is set to return on Monday 3rd June, with former Big Brother star Lotan Carter, Rochelle Humes’ sister Soph Piper and Miss Great Britain Kobi Jean all rumoured to enter the villa.
