Michelle Heaton's son Aaron Jay was admitted to hospital at just five weeks after falling ill.

"Always trust your instinct. I knew something wasn't right but I didn't know what"

Speaking on ITV's Lorraine, the Liberty X star revealed that, while she initially thought he may have reflux disease, tests later diagnosed the tiny tot with viral meningitis.

Now Michelle is encouraging fellow parents who believe something isn't right with their child to have it checked out.

The mum-of-two said: "I took him in for something completely unrelated – mother's instinct, we always know best. Always trust your instinct. I knew something wasn't right but I didn't know what."

"He didn't have a fever or rash or any tell tale signs of meningitis. He was just bringing up his bottles and I thought maybe he had reflux disease and I wanted it checked out."

Michelle, 34, said she phoned the NHS 111 service which advised her to take Aaron to A&E because of his age.

"Within minutes he was rushed into a room where they administered a lumber puncture on his spine.

"He was diagnosed with meningitis. At that point they're never sure if it's viral or bacterial so they administer antibiotics for whatever length of days he's in hospital just in case it is bacterial for when the results come back."

Michelle admitted she hadn't been aware there are two types of meningitis until her ordeal and is now encouraging parents to understand the signs and symptoms.

To find out more about the different types of meningitis, please visit theofficial NHS website - but remember that anyone with a suspected case of meningitis needs to be admitted to hospital immediately, wherever they are.

Speaking about the future, Michelle added: "He'll have a couple of exams in a couple of months time, hearing, sight and they'll look at his heart but the risks are minimal."

We're so glad the little boy is home safe with his mummy, daddy and sister Faith.
