'Sometimes people take a little bit of a break, but it doesn't necessarily mean that's the end. I'm very hopeful,' he added.

According to reports, the couple is taking baby steps towards a reunion on Thanksgiving.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the Last Vegas star said he was “doing great” and his union with Catherine is looking “onwards and upwards”.

Michael and 44-year-old Mask of Zorro star Catherine are reportedly planning to spend a few days together with the children during the US holidays next month.

A source close to the couple said:

'It’s baby steps. They’re not back as a full-time couple but they aren’t taking off rings.

'Alone time could help them. When Michael said he was hopeful of a reconciliation, he knew it would take a while.'

Michael paid tribute to Catherine during his Emmy award speech

The couple recently avoided appearing together on the Emmys red carpet, where Douglas won the best actor award for his Liberace portrayal on Behind The Candelabra.

However at the event the veteran actor insisted the pair needed a break, and felt all would work out for the best and “everything would be great.”

After winning his honour he paid tribute to her in his victory speech.
