It was reported last month that Melanie Sykes, 43, is set to divorce her husband Jack Cockings, 28, after being cautioned by police for hitting him during a row at their home.

And it seems as if Jack is relieved about the news, taking to Twitter to express his feelings ion the breakdown of his marriage.

Roofer Jack Cockings, 28, wrote on Twitter: "I would rather be alone with dignity than in a relationship that requires me to sacrifice my self respect.

"Sometimes, you end up losing yourself trying to hold on to someone who doesn't care about losing you."

A friend close to Mel, mum of two, explained to a British newspaper that the TV presenter isn't feeling quite as celebratory as Jack.

“Mel is devastated that she doesn’t seem to be able to save this relationship. She fell for Jack very quickly, but was sure he was the right man.

"They were really happy but things have deteriorated very quickly. Most of all she just feels embarrassed about how all of this has played out."

The source added: "This is not how she thought she would be spending Christmas. Of course she still has feelings for Jack – she feels like the odds were stacked against them with the age difference but it’s no less painful for her.”
