In this week's Closer Magazine, we explore whether Mel B's toxic relationship cost her £40 million! Here's a preview...

It was reported that bitter rows over her £40 million fortune were at the centre of their split. And shocking new details of Mel B and Stephen Belafonte’s lavish lifestyle and uncontrollable spending have gone public last week as their toxic divorce battle continued.

At a hearing in LA it was revealed how the ‘broke’ former Spice Girl, 42, has just £961 left in her company account due to “improvident lifestyle choices” and “never having enough money at the end of the year to pay taxes.”

Mel, who amassed her fortune during her Spice Girls heyday and more recently her judging role on America’s Got Talent, told the court how her megabucks lifestyle has seen her blown her millions on jewellery, including a £425,000 pear-shaped diamond ring, rare designer bags, a fleet of armoured cars, lavish holidays and a £1 million private island as a birthday gift to Stephen, also 42.

A source says: “Mel feels that Stephen has played a huge part in squandering their money over the years and is planning to try and prove it. Her lawyers are going through all of their accounts to try to build up a case against him.”

“Mel knows she’s been careless with her spending and has made her own mistakes, but she’s hellbent on ensuring Stephan doesn’t get his hands on any more of her hard-earned money.”
